Kiss me, I'm Irish.
In fact, not only will we be Irish for a day, but
Italian, German, Celtic, African American and Puerto Rican, too! Festivals
celebrating our diverse heritages abound across the tristate area this
weekend.
In Philadelphia. Our melting pot of a city displays
its true self each weekend at Penn's Landing during the Peco Energy
Multicultural Series. Next in the series is the Irish American Festival
at the Great Plaza from 1 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow. Clog to bagpipers
or dig deep into a shepherd's pie as you enjoy performances by the Irish
American String Band, Danny Boys and Sean Fleming, among others.
Speaking of dancing, shall we Schuhplattler? The traditional
German dance will be performed tomorrow at the German-American Day Festival,
from noon to 9 p.m. at the Cannstatter Volksfest-Verein Club, 9130 Academy
Rd. Find yourself transported to the country via Bavarian folk dancers,
Schuhplattlers, and music by the JT Orchestra and the Windjammers. Traditional
German food and drink will be served, of course, and don't miss the
highlight - the crowning of the 2005 Cornflower Queen.
The Burbs. Scotland, Wales and Ireland are a few of
the countries that will be celebrated at Celtic Day tomorrow. Vendors
will set up in Bristol's Lions Park, where you have from 1 to 8 p.m.
to barter, eat or relax on a blanket listening to live music.
Over the bridge. As one of New Jersey's historic all-black
communities and a stop on the Underground Railroad, Lawnside honors
African American contributions with Heritage Day today at Lawnside Recreational
Park. A parade at 10 a.m. will launch festivities that will include
music, entertainment, vendors and food.
In Camden tomorrow, Puerto Rican pride will be on
display in Wiggins Park. The San Juan Bautista Parade and Concert will
bring out the one-star red, white and blue flags for the parade, which
will begin at noon at Seventh and Elm Streets, and for a fiesta that
will showcase the commonwealth's folklore, history and art until 8 p.m.
Also tomorrow, experience a day in Italy at the Italian
Day Festival from noon to 5 p.m. at Bruno Melini Memorial Park in Minotola,
near Millville. Children will be entertained, as will the adults, and
there will be plenty of Italian fare for all.
